Reflections

As a child I visited a lot of different churches with my family. As a result I have always been fascinated by stained glass windows, and the way they would break light and create beautiful colors on the floor.
While doing my internship at Nicolina Gerritsen, an artist who uses the craft glassfusing, I drew the connection between northern light, and the reflection that those stained glass windows would create.
This is because northern light is created by ions, which continuously stream from the sun’s surface, and are called the solar wind. In the ionosphere, the ions of the solar wind collide with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen from the Earth’s atmosphere. The energy released during these collisions causes a colorful glowing halo around the poles—an aurora.
In other words, the light from the sun gets broken by earths atmosphere, creating these colors. The same way light gets transformed by colored glass, which also creates incredible color palettes.
My idea was to make a lamp with colored glass, with which the northern lights would be imitated. The light from the lamp would be enveloped in a curved shape of colored glass, which I would design. The light would shine through the glass, spreading a light reminiscent of the Northern Lights on the walls, but especially the ceiling in the room. By making the light move under the glass form, the light dances along the surfaces, that surround the lamp.
